Shortly before summer, Cinema in Post-War Belgium: Rebuilding Screens and Identities, 1944–1967 was published by Leuven University Press (available in open access here). Grounded in fresh archival research, this edited collection is the first comprehensive history of Belgian cinema in the post-war decades. At the time, film theatres across the country attracted record audiences and were rebuilt into dazzling spaces, while local film production remained a precarious enterprise. In sixteen chapters by 21 authors, the book brings that paradoxical landscape to life, situating post-war Belgian cinema within wider cultural, political, and international contexts.
Since books are meant to be read and discussed, my co-editors Gertjan Willems (UAntwerpen), Bénédicte Rochet (UNamur), and I are launching a mini book tour this fall, presenting Cinema in Post-War Belgium across the country. Our talks will, of course, be accompanied by special film screenings.
